For some reason every modern roguelite needs a progression system including this one, and all it ends up doing for DD 2 is making the first 10 hours feel like an even bigger slog as you try to unlock heroes and essential upgrades for the start of the game. But this game takes it up to 11 because it never feels like you are working towards anything. This is a roguelite, you are intended to die, why is everything in this game so ridiculously slow and tedious?ĭarkest dungeon 1 also was an incredibly grindy and long game. When you start a run you have to go through a story sequence and ride a horse carriage, you will ride this horse carriage for a huge amount of time in the game. This game doesn't just not respect your time, it intentionally wastes it. Sadly I absolutely abhor everything besides those aspects. The story stuff is very scripted but uses a lot of creativity and excellent art design to tell compelling but short stories. There is also a heavier focus on story with each of the party members having a story line, that aspect of the game is also fantastic.

Darkest dungeon is king when it comes to those aspects and the sequel only improved on those aspects. I love the visuals, the sound effects, the narration. If you liked the first one, maybe get this one on sale, but don't expect too much as you will probably find yourself getting bored by the late game. But now that I have had a chance to get into the late game it just sucks to have the maps feel exactly the same every time. I have read some reviews that take issue with the run based gameplay, a huge departure from the first game, and at first I disagreed. I found myself doing the same systems over and over to try and get anywhere and that really sucked the life out of any fun to be had unlocking new items or character bonuses.

The later abilities of the heroes lack heavy damage which is really the only way to consistently win, so even playing around with abilities and synergy gets boring. The combat by boss 3 or 4 becomes so repetitive and mechanical, to complete the runs it is better to always kill a certain (much easier, hello Sprawl) boss than to try and do anything different. I have played DDI over and over and never beat it, but there is something fun in the challenge of that game that this one lacks. I am giving it a "not recommended" with a heavy heart because while beautiful this game lacks the combat enjoyment of the first game. Tbh it took me a good long while to make up my mind about this game.
